How Key Quest teaches typing

  • Home row first. Children learn where their fingers rest (A S D F and J K L ;) before reaching for other keys.
  • One row at a time. Levels add the top row, then the bottom row, then real words and short sentences.
  • Finger colours. Each finger has its own colour on the keyboard, and the next key glows so children learn which finger to use without looking down.
  • Stars for accuracy. Three stars need 95% accuracy, so children learn to type carefully before they type fast.

Learn the keyboard: which finger presses which key

Touch typing means every finger has its own keys. The game colours each key by finger, so children see the pattern while they play:

FingerLeft hand keysRight hand keys
Little finger (pink)Q A ZP ; /
Ring finger (yellow)W S XO L .
Middle finger (green)E D CI K ,
Pointer finger (blue)R F V T G BY H N U J M
Thumbs (purple)Space bar

The F and J keys have small bumps so fingers can find the home row without looking.

What age can kids learn to type?

Many children are ready to start once they know the alphabet and can read simple words, often somewhere around age 6 to 8. Younger children can still play the first levels for letter recognition. What matters most is short, regular practice and correct finger positions from the start, before habits like hunt-and-peck typing set in.

How long should children practise?

Short sessions work best: about 10 to 15 minutes a day, a few days a week. Stop while it is still fun. Replaying a level to earn three stars is a good daily goal.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week.
  • Encourage children to keep their eyes on the screen, not on their hands.
  • Replay a level until it earns three stars before moving on.
  • Older students can test their speed with the typing speed test.
