Typing speed test for jobs: WPM, KPH and 10-key
Take a free 1, 3 or 5 minute typing test with real office-style text. You get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and keystrokes per hour (KPH), the numbers employers ask for. Switch to the 10-key test for number entry, then print or save your result. No sign-up.

How the scores are calculated
- Net WPM: correctly typed characters divided by 5 (the standard word length), per minute.
- Accuracy: correct characters as a share of everything you typed.
- KPH (keystrokes per hour): correct keystrokes scaled to one hour. Data entry employers often use KPH instead of WPM, especially for number entry.
- Uncorrected errors: wrong characters you did not fix before time ran out.
What is a good typing speed?
An average typing speed of around 40 words per minute is often quoted for adults. Use this guide to read your result:
| Net WPM | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 25 | Beginner. Learn the home row and focus on accuracy. |
| 25 to 40 | Everyday speed. Fine for most personal use. |
| 40 to 60 | Good speed for most office, admin and data entry roles. |
| 60 to 80 | Fast. Strong for transcription and high-volume typing jobs. |
| Over 80 | Very fast. Top-level touch typing. |
This is our own guide for practice, not an official standard. Accuracy matters as much as speed: aim for 95% or higher.
Typing tests employers use
Many jobs include a typing test as part of the application. They usually measure the same things this test does, with small differences:
- Data entry: often measured in keystrokes per hour (KPH) for mixed text and numbers, sometimes with a separate 10-key number test.
- Admin, receptionist and office roles: usually a words per minute test on paragraphs like letters, emails or notes.
- 911 and emergency dispatchers: typing speed and accuracy, often while listening to audio, so practise typing steadily under pressure.
- Medical scribes and transcription: speed plus accuracy on long passages with names and numbers.
- Customer service and chat support: typing speed matters because replies are written in real time.
Requirements vary by employer. Many data entry and admin postings mention a speed somewhere around 35 to 45 WPM with high accuracy, and number-entry roles often state a KPH target instead. Always check the exact requirement in the job listing.
10-key typing test: number entry and KPH
A 10-key test measures how fast and accurately you enter numbers on the numeric keypad, the block of keys on the right side of a full keyboard. Accounting, billing, banking and warehouse data entry jobs often ask for it. Choose 10-key numbers above, type the numbers with spaces between them, and your result is shown in keystrokes per hour.
On the keypad, rest your right hand on 4 5 6 with your middle finger on 5 (it has a small bump), and use your thumb for 0. If you use a laptop without a keypad, the test still works with the number row, but a keypad is faster.
How to prepare for a typing test
- Take the test type the employer uses (words or 10-key) and the same length, usually 1 to 5 minutes.
- Warm up for two minutes before the real test.
- Use the keyboard you will test on, if you can. Laptop and desktop keyboards feel different.
- Do not stop to fix every small mistake on timed tests unless the employer asks for corrected text; keep a steady rhythm.
- Practise for 10 minutes a day for a week before an important test.
Tips to type faster and more accurately
- Keep your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and return to it after every key.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard. Accuracy first; speed follows.
- For 10-key entry, use the numeric keypad with your right hand: 4 5 6 is the home row and 5 has a small bump.
- Practise for 10 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long session a week.
Questions people ask
How do I check my typing speed?
Choose a 1, 3 or 5 minute test above and start typing the text shown. The timer starts on your first key. When time runs out you see your net words per minute, accuracy, keystrokes per hour and errors.
What is a good typing speed for data entry?
Many data entry and admin job postings mention around 35 to 45 words per minute with high accuracy. Number-entry roles often give a keystrokes-per-hour (KPH) target instead. Check the exact requirement in the job listing.
What is KPH in a typing test?
KPH means keystrokes per hour. It counts how many correct keystrokes you would make in one hour at your test pace. Employers often use it for data entry and 10-key number entry tests.
How is net WPM different from gross WPM?
Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM, which this test shows, counts only correct characters, so mistakes lower your score. One word is counted as five characters.
Can I use my result for a job application?
You can print or save your result as a PDF and mention it in an application. It is a self-reported practice result, and some employers will ask you to take their own test.
